June King Miner Contest in Thompson

Mining Pride Takes Centre Stage

The roar of chainsaws, the precision of drilling, and the determination of competitors will once again be on full display at the National King Miner Contest in Thompson during Nickel Days on Saturday June 20.

Hosted by the United Steelworkers Local 6166, the popular event celebrates the strength, skill, and pride that have long defined the mining industry and the people who keep it moving.

Whether you’re a miner, a supporter of the industry, or simply looking for an exciting community event, spectators are invited to come out and experience the action firsthand at the Thompson Regional Community Centre grounds. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. and admission is free to spectators.

Participants will put their abilities to the test in 11 above-ground mining skill events, showcasing the techniques and endurance required in the trade. Featured competitions include low sawing, jackleg drilling, hand mucking, and other challenging disciplines that highlight the expertise of miners.

Bring your family, cheer on the competitors, and celebrate the mining heritage that continues to shape Northern Manitoba. The National King Miner Contest promises a day of impressive displays of skill, friendly competition, and community spirit.
