Pinch point conditions are one of the most difficult hazards to guard. They occur when a body part is caught-in and compressed between two objects. There are many areas in our workplaces that have potential pinch points so it’s extremely important to know the hazards in your and your co-workers’ work areas.
Common causes of Pinch Point injuries: Not paying attention to the location of your hands and other body parts, Not using the right tool for the task or using the tool incorrectly, placing body parts into moving equipment or machinery, carelessly handling materials or suspended loads or the absence of a lift plan.
How to protect yourself and others: Always be aware of body placement, before you start a task make yourself aware of the potential pinch point locations, discuss and point out as many pinch point hazards as you can as part of your risk assessment and line up safety talks, remove all jewelry like rings, watches, bracelets, earrings and necklaces.
