AECOM Under the Spotlight

Digging Deeper: MAMI Member Spotlight Series is a new feature designed to highlight our members and the work they do. AECOM is the third member company to be featured in 2026.

QUESTION (Q): What makes Manitoba a great fit for your company?
ANSWER (A): Manitoba is home to a wealth of mineral resources critical to existing and emerging industries. AECOM Canada has helped deliver new, upgraded and expanded mine infrastructure and facilities across the world’s richest resource regions for more than 100 years. To support a growing economy and resource sector, the province requires robust infrastructure to support mineral extraction projects. We have deep mining expertise held by our team of engineers, geologists, geochemists, hydrogeologists, hydrologists, environmental scientists, and regulatory specialists. Our teams deliver integrated technical solutions that meet regulatory requirements. Several members of our team have experience working in exploration at both prospective and operating mines. With a focus on sustainability and environmental protection, Manitoba aligns with our mission to deliver sustainable solutions.

Q: What’s something surprising people may not know about your company?
A: AECOM works together with Indigenous Nations to respect traditional knowledge and create lasting benefits. While many mining companies recognize us for our environmental permitting and infrastructure design expertise, our ability to navigate Manitoba’s regulatory landscape and our commitment to sustainable practices make us a valuable partner for mining companies in the province. We are deeply committed to fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous Nations and received our Bronze Level certification with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business’ Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations (PAIR) program. We work collaboratively to respect traditional knowledge, cultural heritage and local priorities on our projects. In Manitoba, we’ve partnered with Indigenous Nations to deliver projects that create long-term benefits, including employment, training and economic development opportunities.

Q: Do you have any recent projects, innovations, or achievements you’re especially proud of?
A: Our mining projects are not just about development, they’re about innovation, collaboration and creating lasting positive impacts on the environment and communities we serve. Among our many achievements, Hudbay Minerals’ Reed Copper Project—a 1,200 tonne per day copper mine in northern Manitoba— stands out as an example of how complex challenges can lead to innovative solutions. Located within the Grass River Provincial Park, a sensitive wildlife habitat, the project required innovative approaches to environmental assessment and permitting. Through careful planning and the execution of field studies, as well as engagement with local communities, government agencies, Indigenous Nations, and other stakeholders, we successfully helped permit the mine site and Hudbay moved forward with development. Throughout mine development and operation, several project-specific mitigation measures were implemented, including the strategic maintenance of vegetative areas on site to mitigate noise impacts and maintain the park’s aesthetics, as well as on-site wildlife monitoring and reporting. Upon completion of mining operations, Hudbay executed a comprehensive closure plan, restoring the site through infrastructure removal and revegetation.

Q: What inspired you to join MAMI?
A: Our experience in the mining sector has equipped us with valuable insight into the various, often complex, stages of mine permitting, development, operation and closure. Joining MAMI offers AECOM a platform to share our expertise and collaborate with other member companies. Our involvement allows us to present a consultant’s perspective on the challenges, opportunities and issues facing the mining industry in Manitoba. Moreover, we work with our fellow MAMI members to devise solutions to help strengthen the industry, while prioritizing the protection of the environment and communities in which the mining facilities operate.

Q: Share a short quote that captures your company spirit.
