Exiro Nickel Company has completed its acquisition of Vale’s Thompson Mine complex, marking a significant development for the province’s nickel industry.
Premier Wab Kinew joined federal and company representatives in making the announcement in Thompson on Friday.
The acquisition has the backing of $280 million in new investments from partners including the Canada Growth Fund and Orion Resource Partners.
Nickel is designated as a critical mineral by the government of Canada. The Thompson mine, located within the Thompson Nickel Belt, is one of the most significant nickel resources and accounts for an estimated 10 to 15 percent of Canada’s annual nickel production.
